artists statement
I am interested in the idea of teeth as barriers and exploring how people feel when these barriers become violated or intruded upon. I am looking at how people behave when they are aware of people looking at their teeth. As further research into this I asked people to perform in a way that revealed something about their teeth. Out of the twenty people that performed only two of the performances were positive, while the others were self conscious and aggressive. This led me to become interested in why people felt so vulnerable opening their mouth. I connected this nervousness to the fear we associate with visiting the dentist. Mouths being an entrance into the body are a place where we feel most vulnerable and protective over. We associate an invasion of this barrier with potential pain and weakness.
I began exploring this idea of fragility and aggressiveness in teeth through video. I am interested in how colour, material and shape can evoke a certain sense or feeling. With this in mind I attempted to conjure up the vulnerable and aggressive reactions demonstrated in my subjects. In my videos I used action and colour to create juxtaposition of these two negative responses.
There is also a sculptural element to this body of work, where I have arranged suitably evocative materials to resemble the feeling of anxiety we feel in a dental environment. I attempted to construct a physical stationary object which reminisced changeable emotion such as fragility. Using contrasting materials to depict the conflict between an aggressive guard and defenseless vulnerability people experience when they show their teeth.

This is an instillation view of my work in the exhibition last night. Most likely my favourite thing I have ever done.
